Press OPERATION SAFE DRIVER WEEK – The Florida Trucking Association (FTA) in conjunction with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Motor Carrier Compliance Office will hold a press conference on Wednesday, October 22, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Hudson High School, located at 14410 Cobra Way, Hudson, Florida. This press conference is being held to promote safety and to educate young drivers about the challenges of high speed interstate driving. Students will also learn about the importance of being alert and aware of an 18-wheeler’s blind spot called the “NO ZONE.” Professional truck drivers and their big rigs will pull into bay area high schools as part of a safety campaign sponsored by the FDOT’s Motor Carrier Compliance Office and the Florida Trucking Association. Interactive demonstrations will be held for Drivers Ed students to educate them about the “NO ZONE.” A DVD is also being developed about the “NO ZONE” that will be distributed to all Drivers Ed classes throughout the state. This program is all part of the “GUARD YOUR LIFE – DRIVE ALERT ON I-75” safety campaign. Billboards have been displayed along I-75 throughout Hillsborough, Pasco and Hernando counties. Public Service Announcements have also run on bay area TV and radio stations. FDOT launched the safety campaign in an effort to make the I-75 corridor safer. It coincides with a construction project to add guardrails on I-75 from C.R. 577 to the Pasco/Hernando county line and from north of S.R. 50 to the Hernando/Sumter county line. These construction projects will add almost 7 miles of guardrail on I-75. The goal for these guardrail projects is to reduce the injuries and deaths that occur with head-on crashes. CONTACTS
